Rivals! Mitsubishi Evo IX MR vs. Subaru Impreza WRX STI
Throwing these two contenders into a ring together is like throwing the Incredible Hulk in with Juggernaut, and then telling them to have at it for a couple of rounds. Not only are they well-matched opponents, but each could also be arguably superior to the other in some way, shape or function. Read more »

2006 Mitsubishi Evolution IX vs 2006 Subaru WRX STI
Forget about the rear-drive V8 renaissance happening on the domestic front. Forget about the pedigreed sport sedans coming out of Germany. If you want the most performance $35,000 can buy, the only cars you need to drive are the 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX and 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Read more »

Subaru Impreza WRX STi vs Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII
But Subaru and Mitsubishi insist that the add-ons are fully functional and integral to the performance of these cars. The Evo’s big carbon-fiber wing is claimed to reduce rear-end lift at high speed. And Subaru says the STi’s absurdly tall and conspicuous hood scoop is necessary to feed the intercooler that sits atop the flat-four engine. We believe it. Read more »

The Power of Nine
It’s not hard to fully understand the significance of both the Subaru Impreza STi and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo. A couple of bonkers and universally craved cult brands coupled at the tote, they’re little more than thinly veiled Production World Rally Cars you can take your kids to school in and go fetch the Star at the Spar with, among any other mundane task you’ll do every day. Comparo-Drive: Subaru STi vs Mitsubishi Lancer Evo
The two cars (sticking to the speed limit, which was tough in these conditions) were kicking up a storm cloud of snow, their engines were humming and whooshing in their turbocharged power bands, performance winter radials clawed at the ground, and I was having the time of my life. A cold January morning in the ultimate, not-available-here forbidden fruit rally special and its mortal enemy: life didn’t get much better than this. Read more »

Hatfields McCoys: 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR
We love a good feud: Hatfield-McCoy, Blond-Brunette, Yin-Yang, Beatles-Stones, Ferrari- Porsche, Ford-Chevy. It’s rivalries like these that make arm-wrestling the passionate sport that it is, that add the suds to beer. A good rivalry helps define one’s priorities, revealing each opponent’s strengths, and, if you look close enough, imperfections and weaknesses. Read more »

2006 Subaru Impreza WRX STi versus 2006 Mitsubishi’s Lancer Evo IX MR Comparison
Developing a car in the new millennium involves a massively complex and interrelated set of tasks, and consequently most new cars have real room for improvement. The tradeoff of compliance and roll control may not be quite right, the brakes are perhaps little mushy, or the steering is too vague on center. Only the maniacally driver-oriented firms like Porsche attend to these details in the middle of a product cycle. Read more »

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution vs. Subaru Impreza WRX STi
Ali and Frazier. Magic and Bird. The Dodgers and Giants. Rivalries often bring out the best (or worst) in an individual or team, capturing the attention and imagination of the public while raising the level of competition to extraordinary heights. Rivalries aren’t made overnight; they develop over time like good wine. In the car realm, the more notable rivalries are behind us now: Cobra and Ferrari, Camaro versus Mustang. However, a new one is unfolding in the compact-sedan market. Beginning this month, the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX STi face off in what could be the next great performance-car battle. Read more »

STi vs. EVO: Splitting Hair
Speed can be instilled into any car. It can come from a powerful engine, sticky tires, taut dampers and massive roll stiffness. It can be found through the right combination of numbers in any spec sheet. Speed is easy for the engineers to create. Speed is just simple math–numbers laid out in an effort to impress and amaze. Getting caught up in this data will give us a picture of what a car is like. It will spell out, in the simplest terms, what it’s capable of and how efficiently it uses its hardware. Read more »

EVO vs. STI: Driving circles around each other
When we last saw our EVO and STi, they were playing catch-up with each other. The EVO needed to catch up with the STi’s power output, so we gave it a Rhys Millen Racing exhaust, AEM cam gears, and a custom tune (with a piggyback Exede ECU) from Vishnu Performance. The STi wanted to catch up with the EVO’s handling, so we threw the works at it; a Praxis suspension, Hotchkis adjustable anti-roll bars, adjustable rear toe links and front camber plates. Mitsubishi Lancer EVO 9 v Subaru Impreza WRX STi v Vauxhall Vectra VXR v BMW 330i M Comparison Test
The unmistakable high-rise spoiler of a Mitsubishi Evo is jinking and weaving ahead of me as we skim across Exmoor, black soot belching from its huge exhaust every time another upshift hits home. If the straight is long enough, the Evo pulls out a noticeable gap, and into the slower corners it steals another few yards. As the road opens up and tight corners melt into fast sweepers, the gap stabilises. Absolute acceleration counts for nothing now, it’s the ability to carry speed that matters. And the Evo can’t shake me off. Read more »

2003-2005 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Evo and 2004-2005 Subaru WRX STi
Production-based racing has unleashed some of the world’s most ferocious cars onto the road–the Porsche 911 Turbo, the Audi Coupe Quattro–but none has been as accessible as the two cars gathered for this test. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and the Subaru Impreza WRX STi are every bit as authentic as the aforesaid duo, but the nature of their underlying World Rally Championship formula makes them far more practical.
