What happened to the Subaru styling department? the MY03 WRX was an awsome looking car, then they churned out the ‘propeller nose’ design that was simply disgusting, now this 2008 design, which is even worse. It’s just so disapointing to see what was once a purposful looking car change into this abomination. Cull it!

The 06 looks much nicer over the bug eyed/tear drop faced earlier models. Any My 05 models downwards look absolutely terrible, bring on the next generation scoobys!!!

Ray, I bought my first Subaru, a 2006 WRX last November and it’s the best new car I’ve owned thus far! I too struggled with the WRX or STI debate - of course, after driving both, there is little comparison in the fun factor with ~ 70 more horse and ~ 65 TQ in the STI. But, you make a good case for yourself. WRX will be a bit cheaper to operate with mildly better gas mileage, especially if you keep your foot out of it, a cheaper price tag, and less of a hit on the insurance (mine jumped by over $700 per year and I have the best rating in my state, MA). Otherwise, you lose the extra power, 6th gear, HID lights, DCCD, and goofy-ass wing. If you have the $$ to spare, go for the STI, otherwise I’d say you’ll be perfectly happy with the WRX both performance and reliability-wise. Hell, for $500 you can get a Cobb Tuning power programer that will give you about 30 more HP…not that I’d condone such a thing! Good luck in whatever you decide!

MYo5 wrx is too soft springswise and too high rideheightwise. It dives, rolls, oversteers and understeers when you least expect it.
This bad mannered bugger can only be cured with stiffer springs (eibach, prodrive, etc…) and proper tires who warm to the car like Michelin Pilot Sports tires. Steering is slightly vague and shifting gears could be more precise. Also you will make a fool of yourselve if you are gonna race anybody from driving slowly in 2nd gear. Too much turbolag.They say MY06 is better in all respects, so better go for that one. Even better: buy a non turbo for better throttleresponse and tune to your likings. Have fun. Of course the new Impreza should be a hatch. Perhaps they could make a sedan version for the US market. But look at the WRC cars. Hatches like the Ford Focus and the Citroen constantly beat sedans. Sedans are inefficient constructions and look outdated.

Tradition is important but I cant help to think that a rally car shold be a hatch. Perhaps it is a european thing but driving around with a grand dad sedan doesn’t do it for me. My all time favorite rally car was the Lancia Delta Integrale. Other great hatches that come to mind are the Audi quattro and the Peugeot 205 and 206.

The latest generation Impreza was quite ugly IMHO that a swap in design could only do good to the brand.

But personally I could also consider a wagon but up until now the Subaru Wagons were just so incredibly ugly that they were always out of the question.

I can only say that who is a designer of this 3 door (blue and this white cofie color pics) impreza is a f ucking retard and I can say that I have had all generation impreza sti but if this cars will look as on this pictures (3 door like Astra or Golf but much uglier) I am buying Evo X, XI, XII ……. Shame on you Subaru Shame on you. It will all get back to you in non positive way. And all you subaru fans we should organise a petition to not buying any subaru in the futur. i think the car looks really funny. The new shape looks really odd and the front looks like crap. I dont think they should change the shape much from the last model becuase i think they really hit the mark with it.

Of all the models that have been featured here I feel that the Prodrive P2 (the one at the bottom) is possibly the closest to the 2008 Impreza, given the industry fed hype already out in the electronic.

There are a few clues in the photos released so far (do a google image search on the Prodrive P2). The interior is almost a carbon copy of the current model Impreza, although if the P2 is the 3rd generation Impreza it would need a change. The Prodrive badging is all virtually Subaru badging withough the constellation. The grill is in line with company statements on the new range wide grill, taken from the Legacy/Liberty hexagon, and the overall look of the car is in keeping with the complete overhaul and hatchback rhetoric that has been flying around.

If the P2 is our next toy, then I’ll be one of the first to my local dealer with the credit card.

I spoke yesterday with a friend that works for Subaru, and he saw the new 08′ Impreza, but can lose his job for showing anyone the pics. He said, it looks nothing like the pics on here, and the only thing changing is the front end a LITTLE bit, kinda similar to a Mazda 3, and that Subaru should be unveiling it around October 2007 into the American Market. No 3 door model, no 2 door model, everything stays the same, except for the grille and headlights. Picture an 06/07 subie body, with a mazda 3 front end and a hood scoop.

Well your friend that works for Subaru does not know what he is talking about if he thinks the only thing changing is the front end. The entire car is redesigned and is not on the Impreza platform anymore. Its a bigger car #1. #2 it will look much more aggresive as the fron grill will be bulkier and shorter. The STi is not going to be a hatchback, so everyone can stop worrying about that. There will be a hatchback version and a sedan version or the Impreza just like there is now. WRX is staying so that rumor can go out the door also. My family owns a Subaru Dealership so luckily I have some inside information. The pictures above look nothing like the new Impreza. Subaru is keeping this so under wraps that If anyone has seen the photos and talks there are in deep trouble. We will all have to wait until the unveiling April 4th in New York.

I am offended by those who say a hatchback is for girls. I love my 2006 WRX SEDAN, and as a girl I would never get that 4 door hatch that looks like the bastard child of a AMC Pacer. And don’t even think about making the STI a Hatch.

I will keep my05 WRX and pretend Subaru fell off the face of the world after 2007.

I can understand why Subaru might want to sofen the styling of the STi a little so it doesnt have the cop magnet styling that the EVO has. Like the large wing and the hood scoop. Currently the EVO is the most expensive car in that price range to insure, and the STi can’t be far behind. I the current STi is a winning formula and the worst thing they could do is make it a hatchback, that would kill the Scooby.

Remember there is reason why so many young performance enthusiasts love the STi. Please, keep the STi a SEDAN.

Hi rich, it’s funny you say that. I’m from the US and most of my car buddies see it the other way around! The US-spec cars are usually de-tuned from their UK/JDM counterparts. We’re always jealous of what you guys get on the other side of the pond…maybe not just in the UK specifically. We’d sure like to have access to Australia’s Holdens, at least other than our crappy GTO.

I totally agree the EVO X will bury them if the STi is not more agressive than the 2008 wrx pics we saw. It isn’t so bad that they made it more bland like every other cookie cutter sedan to be mainstreem but the STi buyers aren’t mainstreem.

Wow, their are so many pictures, which ones are the real thing? I saw in auto week a couple of months ago and I hope those aren’t it. Personally, I like the big wing and the fender flairs. I think the look cool. I would take a sedan over a hatchback any day. Subaru says that they are making these changes to the STi to make it apeal to an older crowd but how many older people want a street legal rally car? Not many. Go back to the old looks Subaru. Listen Subaru fans… i am tired of people complaining about new Hatch shape. All i hear “oh it’s a Lanos etc.” but once you see one on real life and drive one then you can judge all you want because you will change your mind for sure… The first day new Subaru Impreza’s pictures were on the net i wasnt sure about if it was cool or not so cool, but you know… it’s a Subaru - they can really suprise people, especialy with STI (looks like that every 7 yrs somethink is changing). My friend’s dad have white STi on golden alloys almost 3 months and it is…(cant think of any word)….. WONDERFUL! Firstly it is much wider and lower too. It is true that it lost some of its BOXER engine sound but you can still hear it. 4,6 to 100kp/h is even better than previous model, but what some people do is PREJUDGE!! May Subaru be with you.
