This had been long rumored, and it now appears to be true. Expect better fuel mileage and a higher torque capacity than what is available with the current Subie automatics.

FHI will commence use of its newly developed chain belt type CVT in the next-generation Legacy, which is due to hit the market next year. The new transmission, which will be coupled with FHI’s distinctive boxer engine and all-wheel drive system, will be able to handle a substantial amount of torque.

Compared with a typical five-speed automatic transmission, it is anticipated that the new CVT will get 10% better fuel economy. With the plan to improve fuel consumption, this CVT is expected to become the main transmission system offered in the future. Implementation will start with the Legacy and then will gradually be adopted to other models such as the Impreza and Forester.

Not only CVT but It is saying Hybrid Legacy !!! No one can stop Subaru. Who cares about Rally race. It’s more important to produce cars to sell in global market.

Hai! CVT assists electric drive. Good move Subaru. Now make a world class plug in hybrid electric vehicle by using the CVT on the front wheels and all electric on the rear wheels. Dump the fluid AWD box and use the space and similar weight for LiION batteries. Use the long hood of the Legacy but make room for electrics with a 2 cylinder ICE generator motor. Rear electric motor maintains AWD without the heavy fluid box.

I care about rally races!
Whatever Subaru will do for succesfull sales, i want it to keep traditional for old-school-Subaru models such as Impreza STI, Forester STI, etc.

The use of any manufacture building a Hybrid is a Joke! A Hybrid is a bandaid fix that indicates that most manufacturers can not come up with a better idea! A diesel powered engine would be alot more realiable, cost less to build and not cause as much waste as any Hybird! If you take all of the parts that it takes to build a Hybird, it just adds up to more problems for the consumer. An electric motor, and gas engine, tons of batteries (what do you do with them when they are no good?) a computer system to keep all of the stuff inline! People are stupid for falling into the Hybird trap, thinking you are doing your part for saving the planet! Well you better think again! Start using your head and not your heart when you buy a car! Subaru I understand has a Diesel engine that I am sure will be much more likeable than the Hybird, and make more sense!
