Great debut of the new Impreza WRC2008!
Team Subaru made an impressive WRC debut this weekend at the Acropolis Rally held in Greece with their all-new Subaru Impreza WRC2008 racecar and scored a second place finish in what is heralded as the most challenging event on the World Rally calendar.
Piloted by Petter Solberg and navigated by Phil Mills, the Subaru WRX STI -based car surpassed many expectations and won a stage of the Acropolis rally as well.
"Ah! This is just incredible! I am so, so pleased. I can’t put it into words!" Solberg said after the race. "It’s incredible, I can’t believe it. First time in the new car, second is not bad at all! We knew it would be tough here but to finish second is just great. It’s what everyone has been waiting for. Phil and I, the team, the fans, everybody. This car has so much potential, I mean so much. This is it, we’re coming back!"

After dismal season in 2007 in which the team gained only two podium finishes and no overall wins for the second consecutive year, Subaru’s excitement as a result of the successful WRC2008 Impreza debut comes as a much needed relief. Extensive testing by team mechanics and drivers was undertaken leading up to the Greek race in hopes to fine tune the hatchback for extremely difficult rally duty.

Also interesting to note, this year’s Acropolis rally was won by Frenchmen Sebastien Loeb and Daniel Elena in their Peugeot C4 who, with this victory, match the record held by Juha Kankkunen and Tommi Makinen for most WRC wins.
Next on the WRC calendar is Rally Turkey, which hasn’t been run by WRC racers since 2006. With high humidity pushing temperatures past 90 degrees Fahrenheit, Rally Turkey is anticipated to be just as rough on drives as it is on their racecars.
