Toyota to nearly double investment in Subaru
Toyoto Motor Corporation reportedly plans to double its stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, the parent company of Subaru. That could mean some changes for Lafayette’s Subaru of Indiana plant. WardsAuto.com associate editor Christie Schweinsberg said Toyota currently has an 8.7% holding in Fuji Heavy Industries. That will reportedly double to about 17 %. Schweinsberg says this potential change could mean that Toyota will increase the number of Camrys they are building in Lafayette, or it could also go the reverse way, and the company could build more Suburu products here in America."
Bob Rohrman Director of Operations Craig Gipson says either change would be fine with him. "March was an all-time record for this region in Subaru as well as Toyota so it’s kind of interesting news."
Craig Gipson says Subaru and Toyota are both great organizations to work with, and both brands sell well in Lafayette. Gipson says whatever happens with the Subaru/Toyota venture he doubts it will affect business. "I think it would possibly mean just a little bit better financial situation for Subaru and quite frankly Subaru’s been doing really good things here in Lafayette."
Through a contract with Toyota, SIA has been producing Camry vehicles since April of last year. That deal brought eleven hundred new jobs to Lafayette. Gipson said he’d be happy to see the two companies work together on another joint project.
"If Toyota really does have a bigger stake in it I think it would be a good benefit for Subaru as well, we’ve got a great plant at Subaru and with Toyota being over there as well we’ve kind of got the best of both worlds, right here in Lafayette, Indiana," said Gipson.
Reuters reports that an agreement between Fuji and Toyota could be finalized by the end of this month. SIA Senior Vice President Tom Easterday had no comment on the reports.
