Rear-wheel drive Subaru sports coupe?
The sporty coupe you see in the sketch above was revealed by an inside Subaru source to the good old folks from Autocar mag and it depicts the Japanese carmaker’s forthcoming rear-wheel drive coupe that is being co-developed with Toyota who as you may already know, holds an 8 percent stake in Subaru.
According to the magazine’s sources, the two Japanese automakers are working on a rear-wheel drive coupe project based on the underpinnings of the Impreza. Each brand will get its own version of the car, which will be powered by one of Subaru’s boxer engines, though the engine’s displacement, power output and even number of cylinders is not yet known. We’re also not sure if the Subaru version will feature the brand’s trademark all-wheel-drive system either as an option or standard equipment, or whether Toyota might offer AWD as well in an homage to the Celica GT4.

Even though Subaru and Toyota’s prime objective is to create a nimble, lightweight RWD coupe, the possibility of a top-notch AWD version should not be ruled out. Sources have stated that the final design of Subaru’s version of the RWD Coupe is due to be signed off in July, with production set to start sometime in 2010.
