First win of the new 2008 Impreza STI Group-N
The New Year began just as the homologation for the latest variant of the Group N Impreza came into effect. Coinciding with the opening of the new season, Impreza users the world over immediately advanced their plans for participation on events with the new car.
After being exhibited at the Autosport Show in Birmingham on January 11th and 12th, the vehicle for Nasser Al Attiyah, completed in the workshops of Prodrive, was sent off for the Qatar International Rally, the opening round of this yearfs Middle East Rally Championship (MERC).
The Qatar International Rally ran from Friday, January 25th to Saturday, the 26th. The first day should be commemorated as the new Impreza ran for the first time in international competition worldwide. With Al Attiyah at the wheel, the car recorded the best time of the day, and at the end of the opening leg, was some 2 minutes 41 seconds ahead of the 2nd-placed car, a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution.
At the end of the first day, Al Attiyah had the following comments: "This event is as much a first test for our new Subaru as it is important to claim maximum points on the opening round of the championship. I am very happy. The car feels stronger and handles better than the older car, even though it is slightly heavier with the stronger roll cage fitted."
Al Attiyah and his co-driver Chris Patterson continued to run well on the second day, maintaining their earlier pace to score five stage wins out of eight on leg two. Victory on the opening round was taken without ever relinquishing the top position from the start of the event. Coming from Qatar, this is the home event for Nasser Al Attiyah. This was his sixth victory on home soil.
Al Attiyah:
"The new car is wonderful. It is absolutely fantastic! The responsiveness of the new Impreza was very good, with the handling better and quicker than the old car. I didn’t want to push too hard as we don’t have many spare parts. I am very happy to take victory on the opening round of the season, it’s great to start off with a win."
