2008 STi - Readers comment. Plus fresh STI photos ;)

2008 Subaru Impreza STI JDM

Jacob DuBray, our reader, left very interesting comment in 2008 Subaru Impreza STI Official Photos post about new look of the new Impreza STI. He says:

I know this sounds crazy to some, but Subaru may have finally got it right this time. I would say objectively that this new design has caused more controversy than any other car in recent memory. Everyone expected some bad-to-the-bone design with the WRX. And when it was unveiled, there was a cold reception. I was very VERY skeptical of the new design at first, but I understand why Subaru made the change.

In order for our beloved Subaru to stay alive in the market, it has to make money, period. The new WRX should give the mainstream public a less offensive, yet powerful and fun to drive experience. It should sell better than the old model, though I do think they may have played it too safe with the design. I have a feeling that the base lancer will outsell the base impreza and WRX based on styling and interior design.

Now the STi is out and I’m very happy to see it looking dramatically different from the WRX. Not because of the bland design of the WRX, but because this gives the STi a new platform to stand on in the market. The line between WRX and WRX STi is now clearer than before. You won’t have customers shying away from the WRX because it looks like a high school kids car. It will appeal to both men and women alike. You can also see a direct connection to the WRC with this model as well.

I hope Subaru lets this model play out for a few years and lets the style sink in. I honestly think that the Evo X will look obnoxious in half a decade and the STi will pull back some market share from the Lancer. I was originally a fan of the Evo X design but it has lost it’s luster and after you get past the front end, you realize how lack luster the back 3/4 of the car really is.

The more pictures I see, the more it’s starting to grow on me.

Hope I get to see one in the flesh soon.

There are so many things wrong the the styling of this car. Since I’ve got nothing to do, I will let my inner car stylist take over:

The crease that runs down the side of the car abruptly transitions for no reason from slightly down sloping behind the A-pillar to up and down again on the wheelarch, completely breaking its flow.

The door latches are placed seemingly arbitrarily on the car, especially in relation to the side crease that I just mentioned. They should’ve either centered the latches on the crease or put them somewhere else entirely.

The wheel arch extensions are not consistent in style: the front one is squared off at the back, the rear one is more ovular.

It has the frosted aftermarket-look tail-lights of the Ford Mondeo, one of the worst features of that car.

The transition from C-pillar to D-pillar has a strange and unnecessary surface transition, which makes the car appear taller than it actually is (surely undesirable in a performance vehicle).

They somehow managed to make the front end both bland and overstyled, by keeping the Camcordima overall shape and adding useless styling pieces that show up nowhere else on the car. See the horizontal strakes surrounding the foglights, the foglight’s faux chrome surround and the side aftermarket-look brake cooling intake.

blah, blah…blah. What’s your point? Closet designers critiquing a photo…..Go back to (doing) nothing.
Sabaru design has always been different, like (pre-GM) Saabs. I think the new STI is really cool!

It’s a really big improvement regarding styling! Taking hints from BMW, this thing rocks both interior and exterior. Great car

It’s not absolute rubbish but it isn’t good looking either. I reckon Subaru has some of the best engineers in the world but they also have some of the worse designers
