2008 Subaru Impreza STI Photos! This time really officially official!

So, what can I say? STI saga is officialy over, because Subaru have had enough of the Impreza WRX STi teasers and released first high-quality official photos of the new JDM 2008 Subaru Impreza STI. There are still not much details about specs, however, Subaru only tells that the new legendary STI is powered by a 16v 2.0L boxer with a twin-scroll turbo mated to a 6-speed manual.SI-DRIVE, multi-mode Drivers Control Center Differential (DCCD) and Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) are also standard. All these information have been reported already on almost all Subaru fan sites and automotive blogs. Specific power numbers are conspicuously absent, so we’ll have to wait for the rest of it when the car bows in Tokyo in a couple of weeks.

What’s no longer a mystery is the car’s appearance, which is muscular and aggressive - really huge improvement over the base WRX model. This new version has more stylized front and side panels, giving it a more streamlined appearance when compared to STI already in production.  This new STI also has a less pronounced hood scoop that is more integrated with the rest of the car.  The front and rear overhangs have also been shortened on this longer, wider STI.

Press release

Subaru offers the new AWD performance icon

Concept

The new WRX STI was developed with the eternal theme and essence of the driver’s car, the “total driving control,” that the preceding WRX STI models also pursued. This AWD sports model

gives maximum driving pleasure through its combination of power, performance, handling and ride capabilities thanks to engineering exclusively designed for the WRX STI and its five-door package. It also balances excellent safety and environmental aspects at a high level.

Styling

Using a new five-door body style developed from the Impreza model, the new Impreza WRX STI displays a powerful design language that speaks directly to its performance credentials, integrating function and beauty. Adopting shortened front and rear overhangs, a longer wheelbase and widened body flares, the Impreza WRX STI clearly embodies driving performance in dynamic exterior design that delivers as overwhelming presence and beauty.

Performance

The new Horizontally-Opposed 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo charged engine was developed exclusively for the new WRX STI. By further improving the basic performance of the engine, and

mating it to SI-DRIVE (SUBARU Intelligent Drive), the WRX STI offers not only outright performance as might be expected, but also delivers excellent handling under extreme as well as normal driving conditions.

Featuring Subaru’s unique Symmetrical AWD and specially developed in-house 6-speed manual transmission as its base technologies, multi mode DCCD* and VDC**, which control traction and stability more precisely, have also been added to WRX STI. To complete its performance credentials, the evolved chassis by “Subaru Dynamic Chassis Control Concept” has dramatically

improved road-hugging capability and will provide exhilaration and confidence in every driving situation.

… 2 liter? What? The STi hasn’t been a 2 liter in the US, ever. As a WRC fanboy, I have to admit a certain fondness for the 2 liter, but what happened here?

Not to repeat other’s comments, but … mmm, widebody. The new WRX is completely unimpressive. The WRC STi concept is nice, but we’re not going to get to drive those. This is nicely similar to the WRC. No massive double spoiler, but most wouldn’t call that a bad thing :)

I know this sounds crazy to some, but Subaru may have finally got it right this time. I would say objectively that this new design has caused more controversy than any other car in recent memory. Everyone expected some bad-to-the-bone design with the WRX. And when it was unveiled, there was a cold reception. I was very VERY skeptical of the new design at first, but I understand why Subaru made the change.

In order for our beloved Subaru to stay alive in the market, it has to make money, period. The new WRX should give the mainstream public a less offensive, yet powerful and fun to drive experience. It should sell better than the old model, though I do think they may have played it too safe with the design. I have a feeling that the base lancer will outsell the base impreza and WRX based on styling and interior design.

Now the STi is out and I’m very happy to see it looking dramatically different from the WRX. Not because of the bland design of the WRX, but because this gives the STi a new platform to stand on in the market. The line between WRX and WRX STi is now clearer than before. You won’t have customers shying away from the WRX because it looks like a high school kids car. It will appeal to both men and women alike. You can also see a direct connection to the WRC with this model as well.

I hope Subaru lets this model play out for a few years and lets the style sink in. I honestly think that the Evo X will look obnoxious in half a decade and the STi will pull back some market share from the Lancer. I was originally a fan of the Evo X design but it has lost it’s luster and after you get past the front end, you realize how lack luster the back 3/4 of the car really is.

The lancer is a much much much more handsome car at first glance. In fact, I almost bought one if it weren’t for the dickhead salespeople. And I was glad I didn’t buy the lancer. It woulda looked way too boring after maybe 2 months of looking at it. Whereas the Impreza in my garage now, I doubt I’ll ever get tired of looking at it.

You jest Jacob. Fuji Heavy Industries is far from financial difficulties and thus so is Subaru. This car is without doubt absolutely disgusting it looks like a BMW 1 Series ran into the back of some faceless jap hatch. I don’t know about you but I would be very unhappy about joining the Hot Hatch Brigade and that is the crux of the matter. This is not just a matter of dodgy re-styling like the Bug Eye incident, this is a fundamental ethos change and it has gone in totally the wrong direction. The whole appeal of the Impreza was the Saloon/Rally Car hybrid and the Peter Stephens post bug eye front end design was truly the best the Impreza has looked. It was, unlike the recent facelift purposeful and aggresive. But this new nose is bland beyond description and the “Chav” rear lights are an absolute abomination. Subaru have said they are trying to target the Golf GTI market, lol they must be joking, the Golf GTI would blow this into next week in a style competition. Once my Impreza goes that will be my love affair with Subaru well and truly over. Damn shame as there isn’t much to replace it. Unless we get the 4 Door that they have in the USA. Take a look at www.Subaru.com and see how they are spoilt.

Well I’m not going to get into a forum slanging matches with you, but you are clearly a total social misfit and cannot even be bothered to register a name on your post. Presumably you are on of these jealous loser types who trawl the web posting comments designed to insult people because you feel safe in your little room. I bet can’t even afford an Impreza because you probably are signing on. Anyway whatever the case rest assured that I have no desire to speak to someone like yourself and in the future no matter what you post I will not be replying to you. Perhaps the moderator can get your IP Address blocked.

Looks better than I thought it would. For the first time ever, I think the STi looks better in silver than in black…. from these photos, at least. Don’t know when I’ll get to see one in the flesh.

Love the look of the 5-spoke alloys, makes them look bigger. Still wish the wheels ware a tad wider, though.

Interior looks typical STi, functional if not stylish, but I hope the quality of materials is better than the standard Impreza.

I live in Singapore/Malaysia where we get the JDM type 2.0L engines on the current STi.

If Petter starts winning again, then I’ll probably get one. When I do, I’d probably change the sound system/speakers, install a HKS air filter and add some Momo/Sparco bits in the interior.

Thanx for the photos.

2.0!? very nice, very very nice! it would be a big help for fuel economy matters so why make it a 2.5 again? i do really hope that 2.0 and below will what’ll be offered here in the philippines. i’m truely disappointed that this is what it’ll look like and not those 2 kick ass concepts that i have seen, but lowering the engine’s displacement and placing foglamps is nice and a very well job done. 2007’s blue STi seats and interior trims will be a good additional here and also not that kind of spoiler. i mean, the one on the WRC is more suitable here, the big double-layared spoiler offered on the WRC unit to give this a more kicking power and aggressive style on it’s look.

I got sick when I first saw the pictures of the WRX. Much as I did not want to buy anything from Mitsubishi, I feared that I might be forced to choose an Evo X over the upcoming STi.

These new pictures of the STi however lifted my spirits. Though the Evo X still looks better, the STi does not look anywhere as bad as the WRX. I actually like the front of the STi though less so from the side and definitely not the rear! Subaru should change the hideous design of its rear.

Without question, the Evo X looks better but the design of the STi is growing on me. I will have to see the actual unit and the final specifications before making the decision.

I only hope that Subaru will not be as tardy in releasing the STi as it has been in releasing the first official pictures of the STi. In terms of mindshare, the Evo X won the battle hands down since early this year when Subaru released the WRX. I have never considered getting an Evo until I saw the WRX. That truly made me look elsewhere. The long delay before Subaru showed the STi has conditioned me to give the Evo a second hard look … and I liked what I see in the Evo X and am now considering this as a real option.

Lets see whether Subaru can match or beat Mitsubishi in bringing the STi to market. If Subaru takes too long to release the STi, I might just be driving in an Evo X when the STi is finally released in the market.

Go hustle Subaru!

The 2.5 was only introduced on the outgoing impreza to meet more stringent emissions regulations in certain markets, and the 2L block would have been extremely expensive to modify to meet those regulations.
The JDM does not have the same constraints, and so they kept with the 2L block which is inherently stronger, and importantly of course can rev to a higher redline.

It is now safe to say the STi is DEAD.

This is a godsend for Mitsubishi.

Here is a first look on the upcoming 2008 Subaru STI.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Features/articleId=122951#9

To me, the switch to a 5-door hatch rather than a
4-door sedan now makes sense.

The new STI now is roomier but shorter, weighs about the same, but has more power and torque! It also rides better and has an improved interior.

I can live with that! =)

To those who insist that the new STI needs to be a 4-door sedan, I will be watching you recede from my rear view mirror.

To those who keep disparaging the new STI but who never had any intention of getting one, stay greem with envy!

——————————-

“The new Impreza rides on a wheelbase that’s 4.0 inches longer than before, but this is actually a fractionally smaller package, some 1.7 inches shorter although 1.7 inches wider. As a result, the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI will weigh 3,263 pounds.”

“When it’s unveiled in Tokyo, we’ll see the Japanese-specification STI with its EJ20 turbocharged 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four, and it’s expected to produce 304 horsepower at 6,500 rpm. Even more impressive is its torque output of 311 pound-feet at 4,500 rpm, and 90 percent of peak torque is available by 2,400 rpm.”

“With the conversion from strut-type independent rear suspension to a new double-wishbone arrangement, the STI promises a smoother ride and greater stability at high speeds. As Subaru sources emphasize to us, the new STI is meant to replace the outgoing model’s raw, neck-wrenching performance with smoother acceleration and refined on-road dynamics.”

“The STI’s move away from boy-racer image to something with improved interior quality and extra roominess is expected to impress a new type of buyer.”

I changed my mind about getting an Evo X as an alternative to the STI.

Mitsubishi is set to sell thousands of regular garden variety Lancers with the Evo X look-alike trimmings (like its rear wings). This will make the Evo X look ordinary.

Subaru’s strategy of differentiating the STI from the WRX looks like the right way to sell the STI. This though will be at the expense of the WRX. Subaru will need its scalpel once again to work on the WRX as it did with the Tribeca.

Now if only Subaru can get the STI to market fast.

I really like the new STi, I think that it is the right direction for Subaru. I drove the new WRX and it kicks. I used to have an 04 WRX, which I loved, but had to get rid of because I needed something more refined for work and now that Suby has reimaged the WRX. I am going out and getting one as soon as I get rid of my car. The new one is so much quieter then the last one, which I feel is a big thing, esp. when you are on the phone or trying to listen to the radio. I am glad that they did it, the only that gets me is the cheap feel of the new interior, but that will have to be overlooked for the shear performance of the car.

every time i watch this page i like the new STI a little bit more . i originally found it looked like ass and wudnt be cought dead in one , but after checking it about 100 times it is growing on me . The silver one looks kool … and i have no doubt that it is going to run like a beast . Something tells me that the larger population of subaru fans are not going to accept the car though. Still prefer the models from 05 to 07…
and i hope it doesnt sound quieter !!! that was a key factor in the STi . kikkk asss rumble, scares the little kids and parts the traffic dude. i dont want a quiet little shit mobile or i would just buy and EVO !! lol

OK so this is the new look right? everyone is flipping out because THEY didn’t get to put in the wrench time and shape it to THEIR individual needs. the bottom line here is that the new STi meets the demands of people who were on the edge of buying the STi or not. subie owners no longer have to buy a wrx wagon and tune it for the space and performance. this is the subie that will change minds as well as pants! the new wheels look after market, the fenders are shapely, fog lights finally, led’s in the back, as far as i’m concerned this is what the STi fans wanted but would never admit. an STi with luxury, style or it’s own, and a wicked fast engine (either the JDM 2.0 or SOA 2.5). so if your a subie owner for life and your having a nervous break down — take a few breaths and remember that after a couple months when your being passed by one, you’ll say “hey thats the new STi, it’s nothing short of 2wicked!”
Cheers,
~Wolf

I wont be passed by one because I am getting a Litchfield Type-25 2007 model. Yes i know it is £40,000 but it is the ultimate Impreza and not much passes it at all actually. It is just sad that it will probably be my final Impreza as I wouldn’t be seen dead in a HatchBack. I can only hope that they decide to bring us the saloon version of the Impreza as seen on the Subaru USA site. It is a hell of a lot nicer than the hatch. I will be mentioning it to Litchfield Imports.

I have been a subie lover from the day they came out. Finally got one this year my07.
Had my first up close and personal look at STI at Docklands on Friday. I’m really unimpressed. It just looks like any other small car. Not IMPRESSIVE at all. Great seats, GPS., slightly faster….ummm…….thats really the only positive comment I could make. Extra points for great photography, cos it is very average.
Thank god I managed to get a 2007 otherwise I would have been looking to buy second hand. Price is a bit over the top too. Although not officially confirmed, you are looking at around $70000AUD.
