2008 Subaru Impreza STI vs 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Preview

2008 Subaru Impreza STI vs 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Preview

Road & Track has compiled all it knows about the next versions of the Subaru Impreza WRX STi and Mitsubishi EVO X into a tidy little article that currently resides on their website. It includes a lot of information from inside sources, as well as pics that we think represent the magazine’s best guess as to what these two terrors will look like.

The new Subaru Impreza WRX STi will likely bow later this year and go on sale in early 2008. The design ethos for the STi is one of muscularity, and we have to say that R&T’s rendering look sick, in a good way. Whatever qualms we had about the Impreza redesign melt away in the face of the STi’s sheer kick-assness. Just like with the new WRX, mechanical changes won’t be extreme, but will include a horsepower bump for the 2.5L flat-four up to 320 or so, with torque topping out at 320 ft-lbs. at 4,000 RPM. The only transmission will be a six-speed manual. The slightly lighter new STi should be able to hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds flat. There are a few electronic aids, DCCD (driver’s control center differential), but it appears the new STi will be more of a purist’s machine than ever.

The new Mitsubishi EVO X, however, will be outfitted with all the latest acronyms, including AYC (active yaw control), S-AWC (super-all-wheel control), ACD (active center differential) and ASC (anti-skid control). All of those electrons will do their best to tame the 300 horsepower produced by the EVO’s new 2.0L turbo four codenamed 4B11. Torque is expected to reach 300 ft-lbs. at a very useable 3,000 rpm, as well. Unlike in the STi, you should be able to order your next EVO X with either a five-speed manual or new 6-speed twin-clutch automatic called SST. R&T reports that it will be similar to Volkswagen’s DSG, but likely better considering it’s been in development more recently. We all know what the EVO X will look like, of course, having seen the Prototype X that Mitsubishi debuted at the Detroit Auto Show this year, but R&T also rounds out some production details in the car’s appearance.

Click the Read the link to skip to Road & Track for the complete article with all the details they’ve managed to gather on these highly anticipated 2008 models.

Subaru is going into the wrong direction with how the car looks, they will be losing people to buy the sti no matter how much power they put into it. Looks like a knock off mazda speed or a crappy civic hatch. lame……

Truth be said I still prefere the sedan look. But if you compare that STi with the WRX you might understand me.

20 hp and 20 lb ft of torque = 500 cc more ????? lol
THE LANCER EVO X IS THE FATHER OF SUBARU IMPREZA STI ……
only 2 liters of gasoline = 300 hp and 300 lb ft ……(no 500cc plus)

I am not braging I am just saying that theres no way, that anyone can keep up with me in my 2007 Subaru Impreza STI, with any car out there. And who ever thinks that and EVO is better then and STI step up to the plate and race me. I’m not saying races any old STI, I’m saying race me in my game were there’s nothing to lose just your pride.

That’s more like it! But why can’t the WRX look just as good?
They must immediatly upgrade the design of the WRX. First thing would be to scrap that horrible chrome framing on the grill.

I’m hoping and praying that looks better on road! At least it couldnt look worse.

I’ve got a ‘06 STI and I must say that I’m really disappointed with the looks of the ‘08. At first glance I thought it was a Honda Civic. The rear end looks like a Tribeca. The only cosmetic change I like is the car’s stance. It’s butt sits high in the air with the nose down in the dirt. I must also admit that I like the 18″ rims with the 235 tires instead of the 17″ 225s that come on my model. I wonder if Subaru will ever put a flat 6 in the STI? Imagine the possibilities!

They have lost this one. They compete with the EVO by making the STi soccer mom car, they sold out. The EVO X spanked them like a 4 year old in Walmart in the styling department. And these are the words of a proud 2006 STi owner.

I behalf of all my Subaru club members (BASC), I would like to sorry. I am sorry that this vehicle bears the emblem and name “Subaru.” Sadly, Subaru will lose a big part of the market and, subsequently, many loyal followers. While I understand hatchback’s are popular in Asian countries, that is not the case in the rest of the world.

Don’t worry fellow haters of the new design, the tremendous drop in sales will result in referring to old sedan models in 2009. Or, worst case scenario, the horrible new design will drive the price of previous models through the roof! Get ready to sell, STi owners!

well, subaru _may_ lose a big part of the market, but it won’t. yes, some loyal followers(aka subaru fanatics, like me) - won’t buy new WRX. but lot’s of new customer will, just because new impreza is not looking like a race-boy car now.

i think new impreza - is a future best-seller

and anyway - we’re looking forward for a new 2008 STI. Subaru can’t make junk, because it’s 50th anniversary of Subaru..

I already bought a 2008 WRX hatchback because of the great styling, headroom, and perfect balance between sportiness and practicality. With my automatic transmission, I can get almost 30 mph if it is driven carefully, or it can roar when it is necessary to get away from bad drivers. The owners of previous year Impreza WRX cars that I know also love the new styling.

subaru isn’t stupid, they’ll probably release a sedan version in 2009 (making the 2008 hatchback a publicity stunt). as for the EVO, isn’t it slated to get a nice price bump?

i respect imprezas but i thnk the new design has gone all… u know

EVO outperforms the sti in every way possibly, the only thing the sti has on the evo is the better “interior”, meaning the dashboard, sti seats are the most basic seats out there while the evo’s recaros cost 749.00 each. Also evo is faster in the 0-60 and 0-100 it also stops better than the sti. So all you ignorant STI lovers. Do some research before you open your mouth

Subaru went NUTS with Impreza design. It ain’t look aggressive anymore which it should be. Well Subaru might get new customers in due to their main stream styling, but they will definitely loose their loyal customers. In simple words, their lost their presence on the road with their new (ugly, I cant say ugly, becos they are more of mainstream designs) designs. I really hope Subaru to loose all WRCs this year which this ugly STi and get back with a new aggressive look sedan by 2009.

EVO is EVO (yeh) girly car in my book.

I am really happy that I still stuck with my SVX, that what I mean by real presence.

If you do more research. Have professionals do what they do best. In the october 2007 issue of super street it says “the sti should bow with a hopped-up version of the current 2.5l turbo flat four making 300hp. If they have the same power. Get the evo based on power, looks accessories and damn sexyness.
