New 2008 Subaru Impreza hatches out

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX

They’ve only gone and cut the bloody boot off. These are the first photos of the third-generation Subaru Impreza, due to go on sale worldwide this summer.

While the saloon (seen here in silver) looks familiar enough - slightly awkward styling, gaping air intake on the bonnet, angry snout - it’s the hatchback version that merits a closer look.

The five-door is the only model that’ll go on sale in the UK. The saloon - car of choice for a generation of McDonalds car park frequenters - will only be available in the US.

So what do we get? Well, it’s a Focus-sized hatch with a dollop of warped BMW 1-series styling around the rear. And a monster bonnet scoop, natch.

With a wheelbase almost 10cm longer than the second-gen Impreza, it should be roomy enough on the inside, while Scooby is promising improved levels of comfort.

The Impreza also gets new double-wishbone rear suspension and increased rigidity, thanks to more high-tension steel in the body construction.

The engine range stays the same as the current Impreza, with the focus on Subaru’s tried-and-tested 2.5-litre boxer. We should see a 2.0-litre flat four diesel - the world’s first - some time in 2009.

However, Subaru has announced that the WRX version won’t come to the UK either. Instead, we’ll get a wider range of cheap models and - mercifully - a 300bhp STi version to keep the back-road racers happy and the insurer underwriters less so.

What’s special about it?
By the time the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX makes its way to the U.S. later this year, much of the whining about its conservative styling will have subsided. The WRX die-hards will have calmed down, put their blue-and-gold socks back on and started to appreciate the 2008 Impreza’s modest improvements.

The rest of the car-buying public will probably take notice, too. A much improved interior, additional features and a new hatchback body style to go along with the standard sedan should give this Impreza considerably more mainstream appeal than its predecessor.

Courting mainstream buyers has led Subaru to focus its engineering resources on improved packaging and build quality instead of higher-horsepower engines and more complex transmissions. The result is an Impreza lineup with more spacious, higher-quality interiors powered by carryover engines hooked to four- and five-speed transmissions.

Most of the extra interior room comes from a wheelbase that’s 3.7 inches longer. There are also an extra 2 inches of living space between the doors, although the exterior width is unchanged. The hatchback is 1.7 inches shorter in overall length than the wagon it replaces, while the sedan measures 4.9 inches longer than its predecessor. Both are expected to arrive with fractionally reduced curb weights.

A tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel makes getting comfortable in the driver seat easier than before. We also sat in the backseat of the hatchback with the driver seat adjusted for a 6-footer. There’s plenty of knee and toe room to sit comfortably, but it’s the increased headroom that really makes this Impreza feel bigger inside.

Higher-quality materials are used throughout and the overall dash design is similar to the good-looking layout in the Tribeca . It’s a relatively simple setup that maintains the Impreza’s standard three-dial climate-control arrangement and clear analog dials. A navigation system finally makes its way onto the options sheet of the WRX, along with Subaru’s electronic stability control system.

In addition to the extra passenger room, a new double-wishbone rear suspension helps clear some room in the cargo area, too. Open up the hatch and the suspension struts no longer poke their way into the available loading space. The sedan’s trunk is positively huge for a midsize four-door, although Subaru didn’t give us any hard numbers. The front suspension is an almost direct carryover from the current Legacy setup. Standard Imprezas will get 16-inch wheels, while the higher-performance WRX models will get 17-inch wheels with 205/50R17 Bridgestone RE92A tires at each corner.

Enthusiasts hoping to see big power gains will be disappointed. Both the base model Impreza and the more powerful Impreza WRX models will use carryover engines with minimal upgrades. The turbocharged 2.5-liter engine in the WRX will continue with roughly 225 horsepower and 226 pound-feet of torque, but more of that torque will arrive earlier. A five-speed manual remains the standard transmission and a four-speed automatic is optional.

Subaru has been tight-lipped about changes to the all-wheel-drive system. It has promised some improvements, but provided no details on what to expect. Same goes for the steering, although a quicker ratio is confirmed. No word on any upgrades for the brakes and we don’t expect any. Additional details will be released as the car gets closer to its on-sale date in the fall. An ultrahigh-performance STI version will debut around that time and go on sale early next year.

2008 Subaru Impreza WRX

Official Press-Release

Developed around the product concept of new, more refined designs for comfort, the latest Impreza incorporates sophisticated styling and rich interior design, roominess and space, and outstanding comfort and utility, while offering a pleasant and safe ride enhanced by Subaru Symmetrical AWD (All-Wheel drive) with the Horizontally-Opposed engine.

Advanced Core Mechanism

The new Impreza showcases a redesigned chassis, body construction and drivetrain, as well as substantially improved overall performance, under the theme “Only Subaru can deliver such attractive performance and values.” It also provides a pleasant ride with ease of handling and integrates performance with advanced safety and environmental considerations.

The newly designed double-wishbone rear suspension effectively absorbs shocks from road surfaces, ensuring high levels of ride comfort and agile handling. The lower center of gravity, enabled by the Boxer engine, has been enhanced by mounting the engine slightly lower in the chassis, thereby further improving stability. Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), available on a wider grade range of the Impreza lineup, increases active safety.

Engines and Transmissions

The 2.5-liter Boxer engine features ideal power output characteristics under a practical range of driving speeds through improved mid- to low-end torque. The engine has also been modified to improve emissions and fuel efficiency. The 2.5-liter SOHC normally aspirated engine adopts a new intake port and other design changes that make improved low-end torque and fuel efficiency possible. Improved emissions were realized by a new catalyst system that optimizes catalyst efficiency.

Incorporating a newly designed intake manifold, intercooler and turbocharger, the 2.5-liter DOHC turbocharged engine delivers improved mid to low-end torque and fuel efficiency. Transmissions, both manual and automatic, were modified for faster, more responsive shifting and better maneuverability.

Exterior Design

Refined styling is highlighted by a perfectly proportioned body, well calculated panel curves that reflect light and shadow in harmony, and quality details. Sweeping character lines on both sides express a sense of speed and individuality. A sporty image is underscored by projecting front fenders and rear quarters. Projector lamps, used in the headlights, give a dynamic three-dimensional appearance.

The 2008 Impreza is available in 4-door and 5-door versions.

Interior Design

Spacious and open interior provides comfort and improves visibility. Aluminum-look insets in the center panels and door trim add a sporty feel and airiness. The navigation screen, as well as the vehicle information and audio displays are placed at the top of the dashboard for improved visibility and functionality. High-grade, double-stitched seat fabrics provide a feeling of quality.
