Finally. New 2008 Impreza :(

Shocking - 2008 Impreza's new look unveiled

It wouldn’t be an auto show without embargos breaking everywhere you turn. This one comes courtesy of Motor Trend magazine’s May issue, which features the new Subaru Impreza WRX on the cover. A member of the North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club received his copy more than a bit early in the mail, and felt he must do his civic duty and share the pics with us.

Shocking - 2008 Impreza's new look unveiled

And yes - it looks pretty damn close to the old 2008 Impreza spy shots.

I love it. I lug around a lot of stuff in my car and the hatchback has proven godly for me. Currently I drive a Hyundai Tiburon and I can fit a ridiculous amount in that tiny car, but it lacks the AWD stability and snow-munching power that my Subie SVX had.
So, thank you Subaru for solving all my problems. I’ll be getting the new STi.

as a practicing PR, there is no way ANY company would release photos of the actual model being kept so secret up until now so close to the release date.

The new Impreza may look similar to this, but my gues is not exactly.

Subaru - ???
The last vehicle we’re really looking forward to is the Subaru “something-or-other”. Subaru’s PR people are saying that the New York Auto Show will be huge for the company, and the public Subaru website is hinting that a “legend will be reborn”. Whatever vehicle this is, it must be important as Subaru is running a publicly-viewable countdown clock on its site.

So what can it be? We’re guessing that the vehicle in question will be the new Impreza WRX. We asked our sources at Subaru for a few hints as to what the car will be, and they just responded by telling us to keep a close eye on the New York Auto Show. Not much help, huh? These same sources also said that most of the rumors currently surrounding the next-gen Impreza are about as wrong as wrong can be. Does this mean that the next Impreza won’t be a five-door hatch? Does this mean that the car will lose the “Impreza” name entirely? We guess we’ll have to wait until the New York Auto Show to find out…

Or we could be totally wrong about this thing entirely. Perhaps the “reborn legend” will be the Subaru Brat…

This HAS to be a fake. I think it is close, but still a fake. Look closely at the trim around the headlights and tail lights, they don’t match. Not even Subaru would design something that simply doesn’t match itself.

For all you guys who think this magazine thing is fake, I hate to break it to you, it’s not. I truly wish it was, but I picked this issue of Motor Trend up while waiting for my Jeep to get fixed at an AAMCO in Seattle, WA. Yes it says May on it, but so what? It’s not uncommon for subscriptions to be a month ahead.

I was utterly disappointed to see what they did with this car. I don’t think it would be possible for the front end to look any wimpier. The “airplane wing” treatment on the last version may not have been pretty, but at least it looked like someone with testicals designed it. To think I’ve been holding out for one of these.

I don’t doubt this is the issue of Motor Trend, but this is just another bollocks rip off.

Until I see a ‘photo’ of the real car sitting on a rotunda or in a show room or on the road I don’t believe a thing.

This aint the final car if you ask me….just wait until the 5th…God! It’s only a week away now…

I don’t really think it’s that this is the final car. The intercooler looks too small to support the turbo. And they say the interior is gonna be like the A3. Although the only thing i like about the car is the rear.

Did anyone notice that if you go to insideline.com, and look at their article on the NY Auto Show, they have a list of cars that will be unveiled at the show. Subaru is going to unveil TWO cars, one on the 4th and one on the 5th. Is it possible this is a base wrx being shown on the 4th, and that the new sti will be similar, but much different? You could make this car look mean with the right touches here and there.

A few comments:
1. Have a look closely at all the phtots. They’re very obviously photoshopped. Real marketing shots are actually taken on location.

2. It may well actually be in MT. I haven’t seen it so can’t comment. Even if it is, don’t believe everything you read in a magazine. The earlier “real” shots on autoaction are different to these.

3. Two models revealed at New York - the Impreza and smaller Hybrid.

4. Any PR worth their salt would never let out images prior to a launch, embargo’ed or not.

5. Persanally, I’m waiting for next week to believe or not any images.

I agree,

Motor Trend will have to be at the launch like everyone else to get their first look.

I’d be very surprised if Subaru cut off their battle with Mitsubishi by launching this piece of crap as their new WRX.

I’m still waiting for the ‘official’ photos.

Dammit! 6 days seems like such a long time away!!!

It maybe an ugly car, but things really did improved on the car since i looked at the specs. in edmund.
1. fuel economy incresed 10%
2. ligther from the previous car by 200-300 lb.
3. sedan get dual exaust
4. get 2 in. more leg room
5.0-60 acceleration time increased (previous 5.9 and new 5.5)
6. possibe more hp on sti
bad things
1. only hatch in sti (for lighter weight)
2. freaking ugly car!! (any way, the sti will get a better grille than the based

. I have one good friend that works for official Subaru dealer in one eastern europe country - he was at the recent Tokyo Motorshow. He has asked Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) employees on what will be the Subaru answer to fantastic Mitsubishi Evo 10 concept.. They said that: “2008 Impreza will be much more beautiful, more aggressiv and(!!!) more technologically than Evo X Concept “.

WHAT THA F went frong ?????

Comment by G

what went wrong is that THIS IS NOT THE STI!!! my goodness people don’t know that there is a difference between a WRX and a STI? it pisses me off. the STI won’t be revealed until September at the Frankfurt Auto Show. save your comments about the EVO til then because last time I checked the EVO’s rival is the STI not the WRX!

I now know how all the people back then felt when the bugeye sedan replaced the two doors coupe RS…ugh. Damn you Subaru, damn you! Now I have to wait till 2010 for the next facelift and see if I’m still going to buy an STi. Is it just me or is the intercooler seems a tad bit smaller than the current ones?

I agree,

I was heart broken…as sad as that sounds when the bug eye first hit the scene, I’m still not all the fond of the version 7 but I now much prefer the version 8, 9 and 10 to the old shape WRX/STi.

So - based on past experiences I’d say we are in for a fair wait before we’ve got an STi version that we can again fall in love with. Shame they can’t get it right first time like Mitsubishi seem to?

Still looking forward to the official launch however…

Thank you Subaru for increasing the value of my 03 estate/Wagon.. ! You have taken Kia clean off the podium, with your incredibly awful..new aesthetics
Do your designers, not sketch any more..? Or just go straight to Photoshop, cut/Paste.. ! At least have some sort of consistency, plagiarise just one brand not BMW/Honda/Chrysler/Mazda and Chevrolet..all at once…

How about having a point of view with your design aesthetics, instead of trying to be the next bland big car company.. !
Subaru has a history of innovation …Where did it all go..? Always about the $$$ .Probably have some fat cat US marketing manager from GM…Running that shit..

Disappointing.. You’ve now insured I will be buying the new M3 . Bollocks to ya..!

Being a lover of hatchbacks, I purchased a VW R32 when it entered the US despite my love afair with the Impreza. One reason was that I have a lot of stuff to haul around everyday but I still wanted a car that was quick and comfortable.

The thought of the STi having a new edgy style, grabbed my attention and made me hope for something that would make me give up the hatchback lifestyle. But, I must say that if Subaru plans to use this as the basis of the new STi, they have a lot of work to do.

It seems more and more that the design cancer that is plaguing the American auto industry has bled into Japan as well. I’m sure they are trying, but something has to come of this, either a kick in the teeth when Mitsubishi wipes the sales floor with Subaru next year, or some drastic management changes like what happened at Nissan a few years ago.

Subaru must realize that the world is tired of bland designs like what we’ve seen from the “Big Three” and they better come up with something soon because AWD isn’t as a unique feature as it once was, especially to hold a car company above water and out of bankruptcy.

As everyone said……THIS IS A CRAP!!!
They fired Zapatinas for Tribeca and last impreza propeler desing…so, now they will fire the whole company!…
Now i can sleep well…i know that i will not buy the new impreza this year..i will probably get a Golf or a Seat Leon Cupra (2000cc 240hp 6 speeds…about 10000 dollars less than the former WRX.. sorry guys..only for Europe)
but as a Subaru fan from the day i was born…i will say….
SOMEONE HAS TO SPEAK TO SUBARU!!!…Please..all of you in the North American and UK fanclubs…make a letter of protest to Subaru.

This is not a Subaru….
Windowframes…after market lexus-like taillights for Chevrolet Lacetti… air holes on the dashboard (left-right) from the 90’s impreza…a/c buttons/controls from last impreza…front lights and a pumber from a 90’s corolla or civic…and a sideview of a wannabe mazda 3 car… forgot to mention the 80’s golf antenna!

Probably their next “improvement” would be a “in series” engine insted of boxer…. and the revolutianorary….front wheel drive…

SO, ..IT SUCKS!…

check the link to see what are the Subaru’s goals and company missions… so who ever designed this new Impreza should have read it…Did they?!!!
Quote from the link:

“
With the philosophy of “customers come first” at its core, the plan addresses five major challenges.
1. To provide a distinctive Subaru experience for drivers and passengers
2. To increase sales globally
3. To strengthen competitiveness in quality and cost
4. To also grow through the business alliance with Toyota
5. And to grow the level of employees competence and so enhance the organization
“
I guess all of this talk about customers come first is just nonsense… NO COMMENT.

Cleary Subaru has now lost all sense of design direction.

The hallmark of great design is a consistent theme across the entire range. The make of the vehicle should be clear – even if all badging is removed. If any German manufacturer launches a new model, or if you see spy pics, it is immediately clear who the manufacturer is.

In the Subaru stable it is impossible to link the Forrester, Legacy and Impreza (not to mention the ever-changing Tribeca). This shows you that there is no design direction in the group.

The only thing Subaru had going for it was that it was a car for the individual. Now that has also been destroyed with the new Impreza for the mass market.

It’s the end of the “Scooby world” as we know it boys. We will just have to accept it.

I am an owner of a WRX 2003 model and I was anticipating the 2008 model with a lot of hopes for something really cool and fresh. But alas…
I had some suspicions in the past, regarding the older bug-eyed Impreza, but now I am sure that there must be a traitor (or traitors) amongst Subaru designers OR all the design team must have COMPLETELY run out of fresh and inspired ideas. I simply can’t have some other explanation since I firstly saw the photos of the new WRX.

It can’t be SO ugly, SO boring, SO uninspired, SO dull, SO dissapointing !!!!

I was thinking of buying the new model but now I am 100% sure that I won’t. Maybe the new Mitsubishi Evo X, or even the current fantastic Mazda 6 MPS will be my next choice.

WHY Subaru ?
